How To Get That Holiday Glow In Five Easy Steps (Without Having To Step Foot On A Plane!)

There's something about sunkissed skin, the radiant glow from a week doing nothing and the visible under-eye brightness that makes us all wish to spend our lives on a beach. A sunshine hit doesn't just lift the spirits (and potentially your hair colour,) but it can have a positive impact on your complexion too; a dose of Vitamin D can help create that undeniable 'holiday glow' that lingers long after you've flown back home and put your cases away in the cupboard for another year. But what if your holiday is long gone, or you don't have a sunshine break in the diary to look forward to? With a few easy steps you can re-create that subtle radiance, adding a touch of sunshine to your look, without ever having to step on a plane.

Pro makeup artist Daniel Sandler says: "My aim when creating a true summer glow, or looking sun-kissed, is for the result to look as flattering as possible - especially in daylight.  It’s all about creating a natural-looking tan that isn’t flat or monotone; your complexion needs to look slightly reflective and fresh, but not shimmery or glittery." Here are our top five steps to achieving the ultimate holiday look...

STEP 1: CREATE A DEWY BASE
Using a dewy-fresh fluid foundation will help to create a uniform base, but still keep the overall look naturally light. Daniel says: "The first thing to do is apply a sheer to medium coverage base which is around two shades darker than your own skin. Blend effectively over the face and neck - and don’t forget your ears and neck if you’re tying your hair up!" His Invisible Radiance Foundation and Concealer duo (£29.50) feels as light as a feather, but still keeps your complexion looking fresh; the addition of sweet almond oil provides moisturising benefits, while it’s preserved naturally with Japanese Honeysuckle Oil. Holiday skin in a bottle!

STEP 2: FLUTTER YOUR LASHES
The easiest way to keep your overall look fresh and wide-awake is with a slick of mascara, keeping the eyes youthful and vibrant. Skip over eyeshadow and liner, instead keeping the complexion as paired-back and nude as possible; let your fluttery lashes do all the talking and complement your dewy base. Daniel's Intense Volume Pro Mascara (£18.50) helps to catch every lash and coat it in a strong pigment, while lifting and volumising with absolutely no-clumping.

STEP 3: SUNKISSED GLOW
Haven't had a chance to catch the rays? Fake it by buffing bronzer into your complexion in the shape of two '3's (from middle forehead, out to tops of cheeks, then out again and across the bottom of your jawline.) Start subtle and build up the result as you go, paying special attention to where the sun would most naturally hit, i.e. the tops of cheeks, your chin and along the nose. Need some inspo? The universal shade of the Instant Tan (£22.50) is colour-balanced so it doesn’t appear too orange or muddy on skin, plus the velvety smooth demi-matte finish is a great way to add an effortless sunkissed touch. Interestingly the formula is also water-resistant, so it'll stay in place all day long!

STEP 4: HIGHLIGHT THOSE CHEEKBONES
Nothing says 'just got back from the Maldives' like a serious hit of highlighter. Opting for a white tone can look quite forced and artificial, so instead choose a lighter peach or golden shade that will help your natural radiance shine through. I adore Radiant Glow (£29.50) and its four complementary tones, which can be used individually or buffed on together with a fluffy brush; peach is colour-neutralising too, so it helps create a universally healthy glow. What's even better about this is that you can use it on your eyes to take you from day to night with ease! Daniel says: "Sweep a blusher brush over the entire Radiant Glow palette, applying onto cheeks to create a 'halo' effect. This delicate pale shimmer can also be applied to your eyelids, down the length of the nose and inner corner of the eye."

STEP 5: FINISH ALL GLOSSY
To keep your 'holiday glow' look effortless, finish with a slick of lipgloss such as Luxury Gloss in Skinny Dip (£15.50) to keep the focus on your skin and eyes. The high-shine and neutral shade will ensure your lips look full and kissable, reflecting the light and ensuring all eyes are on you! Pop it in your bag for top-ups on the go - plus is doubles up as a dewy highlighter too, if you feel like you need added shine.

Will you be creating a 'holiday glow' at home this summer, or are you hoping your sunshine break will do that for you?!

  1. I just came back from holiday and even though I'm a bit tanned, tip 2 is a MUST for me during the summer. Applying mascara and only mascara opens up my eyes and makes me look so awake and summer ready!

  3. Nice tips! I personally don't go for a glowy face because I have oily skin, the only thing more dewy that I use is my Wet n Wild Photo Focus foundation, I think it's perfect for summer!
