A 'Forever' Timepiece: How To Pick A Watch That Will Last You A Lifetime & Help You Make Memories

SPONSORED FEATURE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ALEX BENLO
Time is a most precious thing. As the moments tick forward and we look towards key events that measure our footprint upon this earth, it's important to also reflect back and recognise the memories that make us. The ultimate accompaniment upon that journey is undoubtedly a wristwatch that you can treasure for years to come, remembering the places it's been and the people you've seen while wearing it. Although I adore watches and have one to suit every need and outfit, sometimes it's the timeless classics that you can treasure and pass on to future generations that are worth focusing on. So many of my male friends and family members have watches that they treasure or have been passed onto them by loved ones, but as a woman this doesn't seem to be as prominent; maybe it's about time we started to embrace the idea that time is the ultimate gift and will continue to bring enjoyment for years to come.

If you want to invest in a watch that will last you a lifetime then there are few things you need to be aware of, or think about before you do so. Here are my personal tips on picking a timepiece that will last beyond your generations.

INVEST AS MUCH AS YOU CAN AFFORD
Fashion watches come and go, but classic timepieces will provide years of functionality; it's always worth investing as much as you can afford to in a watch that you're sure will remain on your wrist almost indefinitely. Whether that's £100 or £1000, treat it like an investment in a piece of art or architecture.

CHOOSE A CLASSIC STYLE & SHADE
Rose gold is hot right now, but how about in ten years time? Mesh straps are totally on-trend for 2017, but I can only assume not so much in 2027. A classic shape, style, colour and material is a sure fire way of ensuring your timepiece continues to be worn in the decades to come - and is passed on to future generations for their enjoyment too.

PAY ATTENTION TO THE CRAFTSMANSHIP
What stands the test of time is the craftsmanship and skill that goes into producing a watch. The Swiss are renown for their expertise and bespoke approaches to creating a timeless treasure, and with good reason. It's this construction that will retain value for years to come, as well as ensuring it remains in full working order.

A beautifully classic watch brand, Alex Benlo precious stone dials are carefully hand-sculpted by master craftsmen and the components assembled in Switzerland by their superior watchmakers. The brand draws its inspiration from the power of nature and from human wisdom; minerals, and the interpretation we place on them, come to life through dials which are as unique as they are captivating. With the choice of Jade, Rose Quartz, Moss Agate, Rutilated Quartz and Tiger’s Eye, each individual watch is unique, encapsulating everything which makes these semi-precious stones so beautiful. Formed over centuries, the stones used are enriched by the passage of time - which only makes their role within such a beautiful timepiece all the more relevant and fascinating.

From their expansive collection I chose the Rose Quartz watch (this is actually the men's size, as I prefer a chunkier timepiece,) as I adore the delicate shade and feminine design. Throughout history many cultures have made use of quartz: the Romans ascribed to it the property of renewal, and the ancient Egyptians included it in the tombs of their dead to guide them in the afterlife. Because of its beauty and natural purity, Rose Quartz has long been regarded as the stone of the heart, love and of peace; if you’re a believer in the power of gemstones then it’s also said to evoke lightness and dreams. What a lovely story - and one that I'm sure will be even more relevant as I step towards my wedding day. Rose Quartz owes its pink colour to very fine rutile inclusions and is one of the hardest gemstones on the planet, so it takes a huge amount of skill to craft it into a watch. The result is a piece that I know I'll treasure for years to come, and pass onto my own future generations in the hope that it brings them as much joy as me.
